As an aspiring photographer, when it is appropriate to start charging money for pics taken? I am an amateur photographer. I have only had a professional camera for about a month. In that month I have done about 3 photoshoots with people. My pics are already getting positive attention, and some people are asking me to shoot them. I don't see a problem with shooting a few more people free of cost, to gain experience, but my mother feels that I should start charging....at least to cover travel expenses. |
I think it's a good idea to build up your profile a bit before you start charging for your work. It's like paying your dues.
Check out a good online photography forum to get some better ideas of when and how much people charge for their photo sessions. |
What kind of free photo editing program can I use that will be effective yet simple? Currently I use Picasa.? I like picasa but I want to focus in on making a color pop out on a black and white background, and I am an amateur, I have no training or anything like that, so I don't understand GIMP or photoshop or anything of that sort... I just want my pics to look more done...??? |
You will find lots of links to free to use photo editors on line and for download here - www.squidoo.com/phototools
And a tutorial on how to make a color pop out on a black and white photo here - www.pcworld.com/article/138288/ma… |
Photographer doing a wedding for free, what all should I offer? I am am amateur photographer and am shooting my first wedding this summer.
I am doing it for free (besides the cost of printing) to build up my portfolio.
Should I offer to do bridal photos or engagement pics for her as well?
It would be good for my portfolio, but on the other hand, I do have a day job, lol. I don't know if I want to put that much effort into it.
What do you think?
(Bridal photos are pre-pics of the bride in her gown, usually taken a couple of months before the wedding. It is common in the southeastern U.S. and is sometimes on display at the reception).
And if anyone has any other tips, that would be great. |
you could do the wedding for free like you want, but then offer a small price for engagement and bridal photos, that way you arent doing all the work for nothing plus having a day job, if i were that serious about the photography i would be looking for anything and everything to build the portfolio, you want to get out there and get your name in the business
Hope i helped

Amateur photo's, anyone wanna judge/critique them for me? I tend to take pictures into the sun, which I know is wrong, I don't know what the draw is for me, lol.
1. img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/B…
2. img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/B…
3. img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/B…
4. img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/B…
Any advice would be great, be as tough as you want.
If you think they're all crap, feel free to tell me. =)
*I cheated a little with the black and white. |
1 - love the idea behind it! - but it doesnt follow anything i tend to look at the one focused rock! and the rest of it get's lost!
most great photo's have almost an invisiable line starting from how you read left to right! it helps draw the viewer through the photo. if i follow the line you have i stop at the feet!
2. has a slight following but you could crop off the right side and get a better effect of that!
the black and white is cool - i personally like color! but over all I would try to capture more shadows with the sun at it's level it's a great time to do so! You get a little of this effect on the road in the left side. and I dont like the fence - at all! it makes it look a bit trashy.. I do love how the sun almost sits in the tree on the left!! very nice!
3. again i don't like the fence but over all this one has a great line it does pull you throught the hole shot! the fense helps this but you know how i feel about it! lol
i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo210…
the cropping of that photo that there is ideal!
you have shadows it's even on each side with light and dark! and that part of your shot i just LOVE! Great job!
4. i really don't like this one but that's personal! i do think you would get a better mood on this if it were in black and white! I see the feeling in this one so that is GREAT! it flows well! very nice even though i don't like it!
well hope you enjoyed me critiqueing you!
i think you need to practice over all but your doing great!!
btw i'm not a photographer i like to "Take pictures" and after 200 i get a good one!
but i'm more of a painter/artist!

How much to charge for amateur wedding photography? my moms friend asked me to do her wedding photography and how much i would charge her. Ive never done a wedding, ive only done free photo shoots of friends and family. I don't want to do it for free and spend hours at a wedding with no one i know. but i don't want to charge her a crazy amount. what would be a Good amount to charge hourly.
also i have someone that wants me to do a photo shoot of her and her son. about how much would i charge for that.
i will be posting all pics on a cd and giving it to them. i will be using a dslr camera, with plenty of memory cards and battery life. i will also include some pics that i will personally photoshop (black and whites, Sepia, blemish removal etc.) |
For wedding...if you have never done a wedding, nor have charged, then I would say in the $150-250 range, depending on the quality of work and amount of photos produced.
A photoshoot for two people...I'd say $50-100 range. |
How much should I pay an amateur photographer for a destination wedding? I am planning a wedding that is about a 6 hour drive away from my hometown and I am not sure what to do about the photographer. I have a very limited budget and I am a photographer myself so I am very picky about my photographer. I almost wish I could photograph my own wedding :)
Well since most good photographers are way out of my budget I was thinking about asking 2 girls from one of my photography classes to do it for me. They are not pros but I love their work and since neither have ever done a wedding, having both of them there will ease my mind, since it is much more likely I will get pics I will like.
I just don't know how much I should pay them. I will cover the cost of travel, hotel, and food and it will be about $150-200 total. Plus they would be free to invite whoever else they want an could have their own mini vacation on the beach. I know as a college student I would work for free if it earned me a free weekend on the beach. Should I pay them an extra $100 each or should it be more? |

Nice and Hot Holiday in Oct? Hi, Me and my girlfriend are planning to go on holiday in the last week of Sep into the first week of Oct. We're only going for a week but we would like somewhere nice and hot (for that time of year) and not overrun with guyren. My girlfriend is currently 14 weeks pregnant so not looking for any long haul flights (probably no more than 4hours). Any suggestions please or experiences of good holidays you've been to in the past that you think will meet our requirements.
Also, not a must, but I'm a bit of an amateur photographer so if there are any places that have some amazing historical places of interest or you to have taken some good snaps then feel free to comment or email me your pics of these places.
thanks gang |

Please help!!! Considering photographing wedding, how much to charge? My best friends co-worker has asked me to photograph her wedding. I'm an amateur and have never photographed a wedding and I've told her no already because I am afraid I will do a terrible job. I've only photographed my friends guys, family, landscapes, animals, etc. and take decent pics but she's seen my pics and really wants me to do her wedding.
I'm totally willing to do it for free because like I said I'm an amateur and have no experience but she's offered to pay me so IF I decide to charge her how much should I charge? I've seen answers where people say $500 but I think that's way too much and I know they're on a budget. Her mom told her to pick between a DJ or photographer so she chose a DJ so its either me or no one else and she cant afford to pay me much. The wedding is about 1 1/2 hours away and is going to be very casual.
I have a Nikon D60 and some filters, but not much else and I know I'll be spending countless hours editing the pics. I'm nervous just thinking about it so if anyone has any advice on shooting weddings please let me know!! Thanks all, I appreciate it. |
Honestly...stick with what you first told her. No.
Shooting a wedding is the hardest type of photography there is. You need experiance to be a good wedding photographer. You need to be on the ball to catch good frames...and sometimes you only have a split second to catch the image...and then it's gone. Shooting a wedding is completely different than shooting anything else.
Plus...it's a once in a lifetime thing. If you ruin the wedding photos, the bride is NOT going to be happy.
IF you decide to do it, INSIST you will do it for free. Look at it as building your portfolio.
If you're unsure of yourself in the situation, I defintly wouldn't charge for it. |
Anyone interested on doing some test shots? i'm a model....? hi! i'm 16 and i want to expand my portfolio, i'm really interested in doing some test shots, so anyone who's an amateur photographer or a student photographer who needs a model please contact me!!!it has to be free though.... i live in san diego.contact me at camiladiazdeleon@yahoo.com
i'll send you pics if you're interested. |
You can look on One Model Place or Model Mayhem for photographers in San Diego. Have your parents contact the ones whose work you like and set up a shoot. If you can find one that shoots TFP, it will cost you nothing but time and makeup.
Always have your parents attend the sessions and sign the TFP release the photographer needs signed before you start shooting |
PLEASE HELP!!!!! I'm freaking out. First photo shoot, I only have one lens..? So I just got my first dslr about a month ago and my FIL who is in marketing called me up today telling me he would love it if I could go to his clients office and take pics of her patients..... She is a dentist, I will be doing 'after' pics.... I have no idea what I'm doing... I'm just learning. I do want to be a professional photographer eventually but after I have taken some photography/photoshop classes and know what I'm doing.
I'm doing portraits outside natural light, I ONLY have a 50mm f/1.8 lens any suggestions? How do you direct people, I'm going to feel odd telling someone where to stand, how to stand etc...
My father in law sees it as a win win situation, I get some experience and his client saves money by having me do it for free. I just wish I had more than a day to prepare
My pics, I'm not terrible(I don't think) but I'm definitely an amateur ANY constructive criticism would be appreciated! Thank you! www.flickr.com/photos/48928557@N0… |
If you had to have only one lens, this is an excellent lens to be "stuck" with for this job.
Be sure to ask the dentist what SPECIFIC poses are needed. Each patient should have the same series taken. If you get no guidance here, include at least a full face from the front with a natural smile and also a forced or exaggerated smile. Also, take the same shots from a ¾ profile or slightly turned from the middle - both right and left. I'd take the SAME views with a "laughing smile" so that the teeth are actually apart with the mouth open a little bit.
I don't get why these will be done outside, but try to make it so that the background is miles away so that it will be totally out of focus. As an alternate, you can hang a white sheet behind the subject so that the background is not a concern. You might need 2-3 layers thick so that the set-up does not let light pass through from behind the subject. You will have to use a mid-range aperture like f/5.6 or f/8 (for instance) because you want all of the facial features and the teeth to be in focus. You can't rely on shooting wide open (f/1.8) to fuzz out the background or you will risk having the teeth in focus and the eyes or tip of the nose a little blurry.
It will help if you can be in the shade. If you don't know what's there, I'd even take a beach umbrella to block the direct sunlight. Add a little of your pop-up flash to fill in the shadows. Maybe dial it down so that the flash compensation is -1.0 ev. That's the FLASH compensation and not the overall exposure. (See page 91 in your manual for directions if you don't know how to do this.)
It might help to take a white card to act as a reflector. Just get a piece of foam core board at WalMart of Michael's and take it with you. You might want to cut it down to half-size to make it more manageable. Just give it to your subject and have them hold it out in front of them as if they were reading a book. Let them adjust the angle up or down and pay attention to how it bounces light up into their face.
It will help a lot if you can practice before the big day with a friendly volunteer. Get the idea how all of this works together. You may use the flash AND the reflector card or you might make out better with only one and not the other.
As far as directing people, you will get the idea what to do when you tell your friend what you need during your practice session. Once you have given your first "command" or so, it will come quite easily for you.
This is a little cheesy with the Kenny G music and the "Burns Effect," but there are several examples of "after" shots for cosmetic dentistry. I just searched for something on YouTube.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlefAdA23… Look at the "partially open smile" ("laughing smile") around 2:30 if you don't understand what I mean. There's another one around 4:30.
I like the photography on that site, because the shots appear like actual portraits and not ultra tight face shots where you can't see the hair or anything.
Good luck!
DON'T FORGET TO PRACTICE WITH A FRIEND!!! |
